ABSTRACT

Objective@#To explore the impact of tennis on the visual health of primary school students, so as to provide a basis for myopia prevention.@*Methods@#In September 2021, a total of 202 third grade students from Fengtai Affiliated School of Renmin University of China in Beijing were recruited, with 75 students in the intervention group and 127 students in the control group. In addition to attending the same cultural and physical education courses, the intervention group added a tennis course twice a week and tested their vision before the intervention (September 2021), middle (January 2022) and later (June 2022). Data collected at different time points in the two groups were analyzed by using independent sample t-test for comparison between blocks, and single factor repeated measurement ANOVA for analysis of time point factors.@*Results@#After intervention, among male subjects, the average visual acuity of the left and right eyes in the intervention group were higher than that in the control group at the third visual acuity test (left eye:5.00±0.13,4.88±0.29, right eye:5.00±0.12,4.88±0.30, t =2.33, 2.36, P <0.05). Among female subjects, the second visual acuity test (left eye:5.03±0.17, 4.86±0.21, right eye:5.03±0.15, 4.85±0.23) and the third visual acuity test (left eye:4.97±0.13, 4.81±0.23, right eye:4.97±0.14, 4.82±0.24) showed that the average visual acuity of the left and right eyes in the intervention group were higher than that in the control group among females (second: t =3.84, 3.87, third: t =3.70, 3.46, P < 0.01 ). After intervention, the detection rate of visual impairment in both males and females control groups increased at three tests, with statistically significant differences ( χ 2=17.86, 34.77, P <0.01). In the first visual acuity test, there was no statistically significant difference in the detection rate of visual impairment between the control group and the intervention group for both males and females ( χ 2=0.01, 0.10, P >0.05). The third visual impairment detection rate of males in the intervention group was lower than that of the control group (20.00% vs 45.45%), while the second and third visual impairment detection rates of female students in the intervention group were lower than those of the control group (22.86% vs 54.00%; 28.57% vs 70.00%) ( χ 2=7.34, 8.24, 14.18, P < 0.01).@*Conclusions@#Tennis can alleviate and prevent the occurrence of myopia in primary school students to a certain extent. Sports such as tennis should be actively promoted to protect the visual health of primary school students.

ABSTRACT

Objective The incidence of early allograft dysfunction (EAD) following deceased donor liver transplantation (DDLT) is high and affects the prognosis of the recipient. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for EAD following DDLT. Methods This retrospective study included 79 cases of liver transplantation performed in the No. 900 Hospital of PLA Joint Logistic Support Force from January 2015 to December 2017. We collected the clinical data on the donors and recipients, propensity-score matched the pre- and intra-operative data on the recipients, and analyzed the risk factors for EAD identified among 17 donor-related variables. Results EAD was found in 26 (32.9%) of the recipients. Univariate analysis showed statistically significant differences between the EAD and non-EAD groups in the body mass index, warm ischemia time, and cold ischemia time of the donors (P < 0.05), and so did multivariate logistic regression analysis in the levels of serum sodium and alanine aminotransferase and warm ischemia time of the donors (P < 0.05). The best cut-off values of the serum sodium level and warm ischemia time of the donors for predicting post-operative EAD were 152.7 mmol/L and 8 min, respectively. Conclusion The serum sodium and alanine aminotransferase levels and warm ischemia time of the donors are independent risk factors for EAD after DDLT. The serum sodium level and warm ischemia time of the donors play an important role in evaluating the quality of deceased donor organs.

ABSTRACT

BackgroundContribution of model for end-stage liver disease incorporating with serum sodium (MELD-Na) score in predicting acute kidney injury (AKI) after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is yet to be identified. This study assessed the prognostic value of MELD-Na score for the development of AKI following OLT.

MethodsPreoperative and surgery-related variables of 321 adult end-stage liver disease patients who underwent OLT in Fuzhou General Hospital were collected. Postoperative AKI was defined and staged in accordance with the clinical practice guidelines developed by Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes. Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to determine the risk factors for AKI following OLT. The discriminating power of MELD/MELD-Na score on AKI outcome was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Spearman's correlation analysis was used for identifying the correlated relationship between MELD/MELD-Na score and the severity levels of AKI.

ResultsThe prevalence of AKI following OLT was in 206 out of 321 patients (64.2%). Three risk factors for AKI post-OLT were presented, preoperative calculated MELD score (odds ratio [OR] = 1.048, P = 0.021), intraoperative volume of red cell suspension transfusion (OR = 1.001, P = 0.002), and preoperative liver cirrhosis (OR = 2.015, P = 0.012). Two areas under ROC curve (AUCs) of MELD/MELD-Na score predicting AKI were 0.688 and 0.672, respectively; the difference between two AUCs was not significant (Z = 1.952, P = 0.051). The Spearman's correlation coefficients between MELD/MELD-Na score and the severity levels of AKI were 0.406 and 0.385 (P = 0.001, 0.001), respectively.

ConclusionsWe demonstrated that preoperative MELD score, intraoperative volume of red cell suspension transfusion and preoperative liver cirrhosis were risk factors for AKI following OLT. Furthermore, we preliminarily validated that MELD score seemed to have a stronger power discriminating AKI post-OLT than that of novel MELD-Na score.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia program to alleviate type 2 diabetes insulin resistance has been recommended, but this program is still questioned because of the risk of osteoporosis caused by hypoxia in patients with diabetes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of vibration training on bone mineral density, bone structural mechanics, bone metabolism and insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetic osteoporosis rats under hypoxia environment. METHODS: Ninety clean Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups, and subjected to high-fat diet (n=60), or normal diet (n=30), for 8 weeks. High-fat rats were given the injection of streptozotocin to establish the rat model of type 2 diabetic osteoporosis. The control rats were subdivided into normoxia control and hypoxia control groups; the model rats were subdivided into hypoxia modeling group, hypoxia modeling vibration group, normoxia modeling group, normoxia modeling vibration group. Hypoxia and vibration program was performed by hypoxia tank and vibration platform (PowerPlate?) for 12 weeks. Glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, bone metabolism and bone mineral density and modeling were detected at 4 weeks after modeling and 12 weeks after vibration training. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: At 12 weeks after intervention, the fast insulin level, fast blood glucose, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance in the hypoxia modeling vibration group were significantly superior to those in the hypoxia modeling, normoxia modeling, and normoxia modeling vibration groups (P < 0.05). The bone mineral density, maximum stress, maximum load, breaking load and elastic modulus in the normoxia modeling vibration and hypoxia modeling vibration groups were significantly lower than those in the normoxia control and hypoxia control groups (P < 0.05). After vibration training, all indexes were significantly increased (P < 0.05). These results suggest that hypoxic environment can promote the insulin sensitivity, improve glucose and lipid metabolism in type 2 diabetic rats, but can lead to a decrease in bone mineral density and increase bone resorption. Vibration training not only can significantly enhance the insulin sensitivity, but also can avoid the decreased bone mineral density, bone metabolism disorder, and biomechanical properties induced by hypoxia.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the pressure field with the single-pulse and the dual-pulse for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) by numerical simulation, and to compare and analyze the results. Methods2D axisymmetric Euler equations and hybrid grids improved CE/SE numerical scheme were employed to simulate the pressure field of underwater shock wave in ESWL. Results The CE/SE shock wave dynamics method could successfully track the transmission of shock wave front, and the simulation solution could preferably reveal the focusing properties near the focus of ESWL: the pressure of dual-pulse was about the twice that of the single-pulse near the focus, and the higher lithotriptic efficiency could be achieved when the dual-pulse was much closer to the focus than the single pulse. A negative pressure with high absolute value was observed after the positive pressure occurred near the focus. ConclusionsThe adoption of electro hydraulic lithotripter could effectively improve the efficiency of stone comminution and the cavitation of shock wave focus was unavoidable, which provided a reliable numerical simulation result for the design and application of ESWL lithotripter in clinic.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVEBy detecting the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in different syndrome types of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in patients with gastric carcinoma (GC) to investigate the correlation of VEGF and TCM syndrome type for exploring the internal relationship between disease and syndrome.

METHODSThe correlated clinical manifestations were recorded in detail and patient's syndrome type was differentiated at beside before operation. After operation, pathological examination on the resected specimen was performed routinely. The expression of VEGF in 104 GC patients of three different syndrome types, i.e. Pi-Wei asthenia type (type 1), Gan-Wei disharmony type (type 2) and phlegm-stasis-poisons stagnant type (type 3)and in 30 patients with superficial gastritis (for control) were determined by immunohistochemical method. The expressions of VEGF in different syndrome types were analyzed by combining with correlated clinical pathological characteristics.

RESULTS(1) The VEGF protein positive expression rate in GC patients was 81.7% (85/104), it was significantly higher than that in the control group with positive rate being zero (P < 0.01). (2) The intensity of VEGF expression was positively correlated with the depth of tumor infiltration, the extent of lymph node metastasis and the pathological staging of cancer (P < 0.01), and showed no evident correlation with the size of tumor and its degree of cell differentiation (P > 0.05). (3) Levels of VEGF expression in various syndrome types were significantly different (P < 0.01), the highest expression showed in the type 3, the second in the type 2, and the lowest in the type 1, comparison between them all showed significant difference (P < 0.01 for 3 vs 1, P < 0.05 for 3 vs 2 and 2 vs 1).

CONCLUSION(1) VEGF could be taken as an index for evaluating the infiltration, metastasis and prognosis of GC. (2) The different expressions of VEGF play different roles in the GC metastatic process of patients of different syndrome types, and the pathogenesis of GC metastasis may be probably various in different syndrome types. VEGF is the relevant gene of GC of type 2 and type 3. (3) High VEGF expression shows positive correlation with the GC metastasis of type 2 and 3, suggesting that the higher the intensity of evil excess, the more possibilities of tumor infiltration and metastasis and the worse the prognoses will be.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUNDPorcine liver performing efficient physiological functions in the human body is prerequisite for successful liver xenotransplantation. However, the protein differences between pig and human remain largely unexplored. Therefore, we investigated the liver expression profile of a highly inbred minipig line.

METHODSA cDNA library was constructed from liver tissue of an inbred Banna minipig. Two hundred randomly selected clones were sequenced then analysed by BLAST programme.

RESULTSAlignments of the sequences showed 44% encoded previously known porcine genes. Among the 56% unknown genes, sequences of 72 clones had high similarities with known genes of other species and the similarities to human were mostly above 0.80. The other 40 clones showing no similarity to genes in National Centre for Biotechnology Information are newly discovered, expressed sequence tags specific to liver of inbred Banna minipig. Twenty-two of the 200 clones had full length encoding regions, 38 complete 5' terminal sequences and 140 complete 3' terminal sequences.

CONCLUSIONThese newly discovered expression sequences may be an important resource for research involving physiological characteristics and medical usage of inbred pigs and contribute to matching studies in xenotransplantation.
